ACDC Achievements!
The Arlington County Democratic Committee is proud of its long history of accomplishments.
Here are some highlights:
- In the 2006 general election, every Democratic candidate won in every precinct.
- We have maintained and funded a year-round headquarters for our activities for over 25 years.
- We have recruited precinct captains in every precinct in Arlington to provide a long-standing and effective grass-roots organization.
- We have maintained excellent communications by:
- Publishing a monthly printed newsletter
- Being one of the first political party committees to have a website
- Distributing the Democratic Messenger newspaper to all voters for more than 25 years.
- Arlington's high voter turnout created the margin of victory necessary to elect Doug Wilder as the first African-American Governor of Virginia in 1989.
- Arlington's high voter turnout helped create the margin of victory necessary to elect Jim Webb Senator in 2006, thus transferring control of the U.S. Senate to the Democrats.
- Arlington elected Walter Tejada to the County Board, making him the highest ranking Latino elected official in Virginia.
- Arlington's Democrats also broke barriers by electing an openly-gay candidate, Jay Fisette, to the Arlington County Board, and African-American candidates, John Newman to the County Board and Frank Wilson to the School Board.
- We have consistently fought for high quality, integrated schools for all of Arlington's children since 1954.
- We consistently elect all of our allotted delegates, and also additional alternates, to every State Democratic Convention, making Arlington one of the best attending jurisdictions in Virginia.
- We provide leadership and training to the rest of Virginia's Democrats, including holding State Party offices and conducting workshops.
