Iraq Resolution - Passed Oct 3, 2007
Resolution of the
Arlington County Democratic Committee
on the
Military Conflict in Iraq
WHEREAS, the conflict in Iraq has degenerated into a sectarian civil war;
WHEREAS, the Bush Administration strategy of the military surge has failed to create the conditions for necessary political reconciliation;
WHEREAS, the current pattern of troop deployments has strained our armed forces without adequate opportunities for rest and replenishment, thus compromising our ability to defend the United States around the globe;
WHEREAS, the Report of the Independent Commission on the Security Forces of Iraq (“Jones Commission”) noted that the Iraq National Police and Interior Ministry are hampered by “corruption and dysfunction;” and
WHEREAS, prior legislation to address a change in policy and mission in Iraq has been blocked by a filibuster in the United State Senate.
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved, this 3rd day of October, 2007, that the Arlington County Democratic Committee:
(1) Calls for an immediate end to President Bush’s failed Iraq policies, and urges our elected officials and candidates to find a new way forward;
(2) Supports the enactment of Senator Webb’s bipartisan plan to specify the minimum period between troop deployments; and
(3) Supports the Levin-Reed Amendment or
similar proposals to our Appropriation Bills,
which would set a timetable for troop
redeployment and redefinition of America’s
involvement and mission in Iraq.
